New York Movies to Watch When You’re Stuck Indoors

I wish I could be out and about in the city tonight, but outside is colder than the city’s attitude toward NYCHA residents (oops) and I’m not trying to lose any fingers or toes this winter. Instead, I’m going to live vicariously through a movie set in NYC. And with NYC being the most popular film location in the world, there is no shortage of movies to choose from. This list below doesn’t even scratch the surface of New York movies; nonetheless, they are all gems from various genres. I’ve listed their taglines too, so you can get a quick sense of what each film is about.

Tonight, I’m going to finish up Gangs of New York (I did not know this movie would be nearly three hours long!). What will you watch?

MOB MOVIES:

GoodFellas: “Three decades of life in the mafia”
Carlito’s Way: “In his world, you got to shoot your way out. He wanted out. He’d do anything to get there.”
Gangs of New York: “America Was Born In The Streets.”
Shaft (1971): “The mob wanted Harlem back. They got Shaft…up to here.”

HORROR:

The Devil’s Advocate: “The newest attorney at the world’s most powerful law firm has never lost a case. But he’s about to lose his soul.”
American Psycho: “I think my mask of sanity is about to slip”
Rosemary’s Baby: “It’s not what you’re expecting.”

ROMANCE:

Enchanted: “This fairytale princess is about to meet a real Prince Charming.”
Little Manhattan: “Nothing’s as big as your first love.”
Coming to America: “The Four Funniest Men in America are Eddie Murphy”
Autumn in New York: “He taught her how to live. She taught him how to love.”

COMEDY:

Working Girl: “For anyone who’s ever won. For anyone who’s ever lost. And for everyone who’s still in there trying.”
Ghostbusters: “They ain’t afraid of no ghost.”
Home Alone: 2: “He’s up past his bedtime in the city that never sleeps.”
Arthur: “Not everyone who drinks is a poet, some of us drink because we’re not.”

MOVIES SET IN THE OUTER BOROUGHS:

A Bronx Tale: “One man lives in the neighborhood, another man owns it. A devoted father battles the local crime boss for the life of his son.”
Do the Right Thing: “It’s the hottest day of the summer. You can do nothing, you can do something, or you can…”
She’s Gotta Have It: “A Seriously Sexy Comedy”
The Lords of Flatbush: “Stanley Had a Leather Jacket and Franny Had Acne. In 1958 They Found Each Other.”

THE CLASSICS:

An Affair to Remember: “On the Riviera…across the ocean…and all over New York!”
Breakfast at Tiffany’s: “Audrey Hepburn is funny…sad…extraordinary…glamorous as Holly Golightly!”
West Side Story: “Unlike other classics, West Side Story grows younger!”
Rear Window: “Through his rear window and the eye of his powerful camera he watched a great city tell on itself, expose its cheating ways…and Murder!”
